Which pub to visit & beers to drink in Ghent
There is a selected amount of pubs in Ghent which we have tried while on a long weekend trip. Here is our ranking from most cozy to most fun and most choice in drinks and also providing information regarding which beers to give a try.Hot Club Gent
The best place for jazz:Let's start off with the best place for jazz, which is fairly easy to provide, since it was the only jazz bar we've visited.
It is 'Hot Club Gent' the best place in Ghent to be for some live performance.
When we were in Hot Club Gent, we enjoyed the performance a lot, this performance was done by a group of about seven people who all played a different instrument.
We were already blown away when the performance was just instrumental, but at some point the person in the middle started to singing along and was doing the 'talking' jazz, where the people reacted to it with 'tell me more, tell me more' which made it an even better experience.
Not only was this a very cozy place, this was also one of our best experiences in the pubs in Ghent.
The people were enjoying the music, not bothering you too much.
At Hot Club Gent it is a sin to talk during the performance, so you are required to be quiet during the ear blessing music.
The beers were quite normal for Ghent, got some fruity ones, some special ones, some blond ones, some dark ones, some triples etc.
This pub was mostly focused on Duvel, so if you are fan of this kind of beer, surely go for a drink there, and I'd highly recommend doing this when there is a live performance!
To visit this jazz club, you have to go through a small alley located close to the canal.

The beers we had were the 'Gentse tietje' and 'Kriek from the draft', which were quite good beers.
It is hard to tell which beer would be the best choice to get in Ghent, because it's Belgium! And this country is the place for the best beers (Imo).
But to summon the drink up, I enjoyed the 'Ghentse tietje' is was a blond / sweet beer, with a bit of a dry aftertaste. I won't call it the best beer I ever had, but it's quite good. And of course, you should try it, because it comes with some boobs on the glass!
We really enjoyed this pub, the locals were cheering downstairs for a friend who joined some online challenge from Tom Waes. While the locals downstairs were enjoying their television, we pooled with some other locals upstairs. A fun experience, and some great beer.

PS: If you ask for beer, ask 'mag ik een pintje', this is the Belgium way of asking for a beer.

When we sat down, the people behind the bar were playing Ping-Pong with with some plates, it looked quite fun. They were also really nice, always gave you a smile, which is a huge deal if you sit at the bar!
We got a recommendation to try out a 'Geuze' beer, so we did!
This was the right place to drink this, because they had a lot of choice which to drink.
After looking through the menu we got blown away with all the different kinds of prices, heck even one was 28 euros for a single beer. We asked the waiter, and she told us there is a whole process behind making these beers, and that some are just more expensive to make.
So I asked for which one I should give a try, and that was the 'GEUZE BOON', this beer was great! At the beginning of drinking it, you are really regretting you bought this and now have to drink it empty. But after a couple of sips, the overwhelming sour beer is winning over your tastebuds, and you will (hopefully) start to enjoy it.
When we were back in the Netherlands at a bar, I couldn't resist to order it when they had it!
We also had a 'Trollebier' which was a blond beer, that was a tiny bit fresh but really had the full blond beer taste. Quite a good beer, and you should for sure try it out.
Now the beer that also blew my taste buds away, this beer was just pitch black when I poured it out of the can at Trollekelder.
The beer is called: 'IK KAN NIET DENKEN MET DIE F***KING SLIJPSCHIJF' from Dok Brewing, which has a fun logo that looks like their building.
This beer was so extremely dark, that it was half way really hard to drink. But it was really good at the start, and exploded my taste buds.
After this there were a lot of loud people, and we couldn't even talk anymore, that's how loud it was, that's why minus⭐
De Omgekeerde wereld
The best place for interaction with the locals:
The pub 'De Omgekeerde wereld' is a great pub, it is very exciting and joyful.
We started off once at this place just to look around if we'd like it, where we later came back for some more. When we arrived at De Omgekeerde Wereld, we grabbed some nice beers.

After these beers we went out.. A couple of days later we came back, and I had a good Duvel 6.66, which is part of my favorite beers-list.
Now if you get bored when drinking, you can go upstairs to the pool table.
And if you really feel like experiencing, ask the locals for a game of pool!

Aap & Giraf
The best sit at the bar experience:
Just want to sit at a bar somewhere? And have some small talk, maybe even play darts with some locals and tourists?
This place has great music, providing a variation of classic's in soul, reggae, triphop, rock and even a bit of jazz.
The guy behind the bar is just playing his Spotify playlist, this is quite fun, it just shows that the bar is not attached to some playlist, and they can just select their own liking of music, which is a good taste!

At the pub 'Aap' their normal beer is the 'Sparta pils', which is a dry beer, but very refreshing.
Aap & Giraf seem to be from the same owner (I think), they kind of serve the same drinks, and the inside and outside of the buildings have the same style.
At the bar Giraf I asked a local for a beer I should give a try, and his response was; 'well what do you like'. Told him; 'I like the dark beers', so he recommended me a dark beer with a strange name, that I do not remember. It was a great beer, had a bit of a woody taste but also a tidy bit of sweet honey.
A great choice to go for when you visit bar Giraf.

But let's cut it straight, if you want a more of alternative bar where you expect rock classics, go to Giraf, this bar also offers live music from DJ's from time to time.
If you want a more of a laid back experience, go to Aap! And drink Sparta pils!

Trollekelder
The most choice of beers! And good beers are for sure available!
Now let's really get into the holy grail of beers, this place was quite huge, it's not the first thing you'd think when you walk into it. But it has a downstairs, up stairs and somewhere in the way back. So do not give up if the pub is already full of people.
